O. Scott Hume, M.D. beloved husband, father, “Grumps”, brother and friend died on April 27, 2011 of pancreatic cancer. He was 70. Scott was born in New York City to Robert Orne and Jeanne Richter Hume on August 22, 1940 He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Mary Grace and their children: Gina Vance and husband Tom (Austin); Robert Hume and wife Kimberly (Austin); Rose Sager and husband Curtis (Houston). Grandchildren: Julia, Amy and Sheri Vance; Dominic, Alexandra and Avery Hume; Alyssa, Michael and Zachary Sager. He is also survived by his sister Janice Ann Hume (Florida) and brother-in-law Frank Tropeano (New York) along with nieces, nephews, cousin and very good friends. Scott earned his Medical Degree at Cornell Medical School in New York, completed his Ob/Gyn training and earned a Master of Public Health Degree at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. He served in the Army at Ft. Carson Colorado and was awarded The Army Medal of Commendation. In 1974 he came to Houston to join the Dept. of OB/Gyn at UT Medical School and stayed on in Houston in private practice. He was a member of the Harris County Medical Society, the Texas Medical Association, American College of Ob/Gyn an Honorary member of the Harris County Medical Alliance and the Retired Physicians’ Organization. After his retirement he became a Master Gardener. His work with the Agricultural Extension service and lectures on Plant Disease became one of his passions. He also loved participating in the Retired Physicians’ program which helped train nursing students. He was a “hands on” husband, Dad and Friend with a wonderful sense of humor. He was a computer wiz and loved wookworking, bicycling, classical music, opera and most of all the privilege of delivering babies. A member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church, his funeral Mass and reception will be held at the church at 10:30 am on Friday, May 6th (625 Nottingham Oaks Tr.) The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, HCMS Philanthropic Fund/Nursing Scholarships or to Houston Hospice, whose staff the family gratefully thanks for the loving and respectful care they provided our Husband, Father, and Best Friend.
