Robert Joseph Cote

Robert Joseph Cote, 97, of Houston passed away Monday, January 16, 2023. Mr. Cote was born September 12, 1925 in Laconia, New Hampshire to Adelard and Cleophee Cote. He is survived by his wife Gail Solomon Cote; four children, Julie Cote, Daniel and Anna Cote, Matthew and Gabriela Cote, and Rebecca Cote; grandchildren, Tobin, Hudson, Skyler, Joshua, Natalia, and Nicolas; his sister Gloria; as well as Gail’s siblings Carol Solomon, Howard and Jackie Dubinett, Steve Dubinett and Beth Mackenzie, and Charlotte Dubinett Connelly. Also numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. A man of deep conviction and interminable wit, the Catholic faith guided Bob throughout his life’s journeys. With a licentiate in Sacred Theology, advanced degrees in Library Science and Philosophy from Columbia and Boston College, respectively, Bob dedicated the early half of his life to God and his love of learning. He helped establish a Jesuit school on the outskirts of Baghdad, serving as its first Librarian. Bob’s later life guided him towards an equally powerful force, that of love for another. He married Gail, pursued his doctorate at the University of London, fathered four children, owned a bookstore, spent a couple of decades in the public school system as-you guessed it-a Librarian!-and infused the lives of those who knew him with laughter, love, and joy. As surprises go, six grandchildren rank right at the top. Bob married a bit later in life, and considered himself fortunate enough to raise four kids. He never expected to live to welcome grandchildren. He reveled in the experience of being the patriarch of such a large clan. Faith, Family, and Health-the cornerstones of an impactful life. Those who loved him best describe him as a genuine listener, fountain of knowledge, fascinating storyteller, a loving/devoted husband and father, and a kind soul. Throughout it all, Bob remained a faithful servant of God, ending his time on Earth attending St. Cyril of Alexandria Catholic Church. The family will be present to receive friends at St. Cyril of Alexandria Catholic Church for visitation Friday, January 20, 2023 from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, January 20, 2023 at 10:00 AM at St. Cyril of Alexandria Catholic Church, 10503 Westheimer Rd, Houston, TX 77042. Mr. Cote will be laid to rest in Woodlawn Cemetery following Holy Mass in a private family ceremony.
