Robert "Bob" Neary

Robert “Bob” Neary was born on November 11, 1949 in Brooklyn, NY and passed away peacefully, after an 8 month battle with lung cancer, on Monday, February 18, 2013 in Houston, TX surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his parents James and Rose Kelly Neary, his brother James Neary, Jr. and his sister Joan Neary Maxey. He is survived by his wife of 38 years Alice (Edelmann), son Robert James Neary, daughter Erin Neary Odom, son-in-law William M. Odom and grandson Ryan M. Odom. He is also survived by his sister Patricia Hayden (Joseph) of Boynton Beach, FL., sister Elizabeth Silver (Marty) of Framingham, MA., sister RoseAnn Cleary (Joseph) of S. Jamesport, N.Y., sister Barbara Gillcrist (Dan) of Santa Fe, N.M., brother Joseph (Patricia) of Georgetown, TX, plus many loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Bob grew up in Freeport, Long Island, NY where he developed his great love of the ocean and beach. For many years, Bob was a hard-working member of the New York Bricklayer’s Union. As a young, married couple, Bob and Alice moved to Houston in 1976. Bob became a Vice President of the Personal Investment Adviser Group at Amegy Bank where he enjoyed working for the past 15 years. Bob was also a longtime active member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church. Bob was a very involved father, spending countless hours coaching his children in various sports throughout the years. For several of those years, Bob was the Commissioner of the Spring Branch Sports Association. Bob was an avid reader with a voracious appetite for knowledge, a cycling enthusiast, and he loved to travel, especially to Ireland, with family and friends. One of Bob’s greatest achievements, according to his children, was his attendance at the 1969 Woodstock Music Festival. Bob was a family man, who truly believed that all he needed in his life was his faith, his family and their love, which he always held close. He was ecstatic to meet his first grandchild, Ryan, this past December and spend his first Christmas with him. Visitation with the family will be held on Friday, February 22nd at Dettling Funeral Home, 14094 Memorial Drive @ Kirkwood from 5:00pm until 7:00pm with the Rosary being recited at 7:00pm in the Chapel of Dettling Funeral Home. The Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, February 23rd at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 625 Nottingham Oaks Trail, at 12:00 noon.
