Rosalie Burns Hargis

Rosalie Burns Hargis was born April 30, 1920 in Goliad, Texas, died April 2, 2011, Houston, Texas. Rosalie grew up in the historic community of Goliad, graduated from Texas A&I, Kingsville, Texas, and returned to Goliad to teach school. She met and married A.V. Hargis in 1941 and began a series of moves for his career as a geophysicist. She always managed to make a home out of these temporary stops. After countless moves throughout Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Canada, they settled in Houston in 1966. Rosalie was a true Yellow Rose of Texas. Her exuberance was always evident. She never forgot a friend or acquaintance and, no doubt, they never forgot her. Her favorite activity was cooking in her kitchen while her beloved pets scurried around her feet. She reveled in the achievements of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She loved her church, bridge with friends, her Jazzercise class, and the children in the neighborhood. Rosalie was preceded in death by A.V., her husband of 42 years, and her brother, James M. Burns, and her nephew Ben Burns, Jr. She is survived by her son, Burns Hargis and wife, Ann, and son, Dick Hargis and wife Holly, grandchildren Matt Hargis and wife, Michelle, Kate Hargis Haas and husband Richard, Jenny Hargis Stirrat and husband Glenn, and Beth Hargis, and 3 great-grandchildren, Peighton and Preston Hargis and Oliver Haas. She is also survived by her brother Ben Burns and wife Nancy, and nieces and nephews Tom Burns, Jim (Jack) Burns and wife Judy, Patricia Burns Whitehouse and husband Herb, James Rippy and his wife, Janet, David Rippy and his wife, Maridel and numerous great-nieces and nephews. The family extends special thanks to Katy Eldercare for their compassionate companionship to our mother over the past six months. A Memorial Service celebrating Rosalie’s life will be conducted 10:30 a.m. on Tues, April 5 at Holy Spirit Episcopal Church, 12535 Perthshire Road, Houston, Texas preceded by a family burial service in Goliad. In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests contributions in Rosalie’s name be directed to: Holy Spirit Episcopal Church or OSU Foundation for OSU-CVHS Vet School, Cohn Family Animal Shelter, 400 S. Monroe, Stillwater, OK 74074. Rosalie’s spirit and personality attracted all. She will be missed but always remembered.
