Thomas Lee Young

Thomas Lee Young, 74, of Houston, passed away on July 25th, 2021. Tom was born on August 12th, 1946, in Houston, Texas, to Melvin and Violet Young. He was a devoted partner, loving father, grandfather, brother, mentor, and friend. He is survived by Rose Diers, his soulmate of 13 years; children, Scott Young and wife Ruth, Michael Young and wife Kari; grandchildren Ashton Young, Jasmine Young, Jacob Young, and Julia Young; brother Bill and wife Juanita, and brother Melvin and wife Margaret Young. Tom grew up in Houston, where he lived until enlisting in the US Air Force in 1965. Tom served in the Air Force in Montana as a mechanic until returning to his native Houston. Tom’s interest in machinery and logistics led him to careers at Brown & Root, Powell Electric Company, and eventually to UTC Overseas, Inc. Tom enjoyed his work life and loved his work family, as his excitement for working on large projects was not only what he did but also part of who he was. He embodied an admirable work ethic and commitment to vocation that he truly enjoyed. Tom loved agricultural pursuits and spent many years raising cattle and horses. He enjoyed the quiet, early mornings outside at his ranch home in Alvin, Texas, and he became a loyal member of a regular weekend breakfast club at a local diner. His love of custom race cars kept his garage and social life full, where he proudly displayed his projects and gathered with close friends who shared his passion for cars. Tom was a devoted father and loving grandfather, and he enjoyed hearing stories of the childrens’ recent adventures. His love for his soulmate, Rose Diers, further expanded his family to include her’s. Tom was made complete in his love for Rose. They travelled together, spent time with animal family members, Cowboy, Petey, and Franklin, laughed, loved, and created happy memories together that are the fruit of life. A memorial gathering will be held Saturday, August 7, 2021, at 2 p.m. at Dettling Funeral Home, 14094 Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77079.
