Bertha T. Collins

May 23, 1929 - March 10, 2021

Bertha Terrazas Collins, 91, of Houston passed away at her home Wednesday, March 10, 2021. Mrs. Collins was born May 23, 1929 in Orange, Texas to Refugio and Elvira Menchaca Terrazas. She is preceded in death by her parents and her son Joseph Collins Jr. Bertha is survived by her husband of 72 years marriage, Joseph (Eddie) Collins; children, John A. Collins, Jeanne T. Wallace & husband Kevin Barker; grand- children, Kara Trista Wallace, Caleb S. Collins, Bryson C. Wallace, Samantha B. Collins; she is also survived by 6 great-grandchildren and her brother, Refugio Terrazas. Bertha was raised in the El Paso, where she graduated from high school. She met the love of her life, Joe (Eddie) Collins in June 1948 at Shaw Airforce Base in South Carolina when she was visiting her sister and brother-in-law. The couple were married in El Paso, TX in April 1949. Bertha was a shining light to everyone’s lives, gracing us with her witty humor and enduring smile. Her personality was infectious, even to those who did not know her. Bertha was always a giver, a reliable source of love and help for anyone in need. Bertha valued family and led by example. She loved having grandkids, nieces, and nephews over for a pool day or sleepover. She was a loyal gardener, as she adored the vibrant colors of various azaleas, hibiscus, and crepe myrtles all around her. She loved her dogs and always brought treats home when she went out to eat. Bertha was as a devoted Texans and Astros fan; she knew all the sports highlights and schedules like the back of her hand. Bertha was quick with her words and could make anyone laugh or feel welcome. Bertha loved to travel. She loved her Hawaiian trips and cruises. She was a wonderful cook and seamstress. She loved to make ceramics in her spare time. She was a very family-oriented person who loved spending time with her family above all else. She was a faithful member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church. The Collins family will be present to receive friends Wednesday, March 17, 2021 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM with a Holy Rosary being recited at 7:00 PM at Dettling Funeral Home, 14094 Memorial Dr., Houston, TX 77079. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, March 18, 2021 at 10:30 AM at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 625 Nottingham Oaks Trail, Houston, TX 77079. Bertha will be laid to rest at VA Houston National Cemetery in a private family ceremony.
