Joan Pjura Kulish

April 24, 1932 - June 17, 2022

Joan Pjura Kulish, 90, passed away after a short illness on June 17, 2022. She was born April 24, 1932 to Stephen Pjura and Vera Warga Pjura in Bridgeport, Connecticut. She enjoyed a happy childhood that included trips into New York City with her grandmother for shopping and Broadway shows. She graduated from nursing school and worked as an operating room nurse with her childhood friend Patricia Maurer until marrying Richard “Dick” Kulish in 1954. They had three sons in quick succession, Kevin, Kyle, and Kim. The family later moved to south Florida where they enjoyed boating and fishing in the Florida Keys and Joan resumed her nursing career in the home health field. While the boys attended the University of Florida, Joan and Dick moved to Arizona where they enjoyed desert living and Joan continued working in home health. Dick died in 1991 and Joan later moved to Houston, Texas to be closer to family. She lived 16 pleasant years in independent living at Eagle’s Trace Senior Living Community. During her lifetime, Joan enjoyed worldwide travel, Broadway musicals, and rooting for the Florida Gators. Joan died peacefully with two sons at her side. She is preceded in death by her parents, brother Stephen Pjura, and her beloved son Kyle Kulish. She leaves behind sons Kevin and Kim Kulish and their respective spouses Beverly McPhail and Becky Howard, two grandchildren, Justin (spouse Rachael) Kulish and Kayla Kulish, and her life-long best friend and nursing buddy Patricia Maurer. Joan was looking forward to welcoming her first great-grandchild to be born in August of this year, but it was not to be. Joan, a lifelong Catholic, was excited to be reunited with Dick and Kyle, the latter of which will once again be delighting her by belting out show tunes and delivering wince-inducing puns. Thank you to the kind and dedicated staff at Memorial Hermann, Memorial City Hospital and Bayou Vista at Eagle’s Trace for their excellent care.
