December 22, 1923 - October 21, 2021
On December 22, 1923, Sydney Mae Conner was born in McKinney, Texas to the union of Dola Floyd Fields and Loranzer Dowell Conner, Sr. She was the youngest of three children. She had two brothers Loranzer Dowell Conner, Jr. (L.D.) and Hugh Laron Conner, Sr. They were raised in McKinney where Sydney studied piano as a young girl before graduating from Doty High School. Sydney studied at Jarvis Christian College for one year, and then moved to Los Angeles, California to earn money with the intention of returning to Jarvis. However, upon her return to McKinney, she married Osburne Young and became the mother of two daughters, Dola and Paulette. In 1956, the Young family moved to New Rochelle, N.Y. While there, she became a licensed cosmetologist. Piano and cosmetology were two of the loves in her life. Although she never received a teaching degree, she was a natural born teacher. She taught piano and did not hesitate to share whatever knowledge she gained in any field. Upon leaving New York, she settled in Houston, Texas. She was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on April 22, 1967. She enjoyed reading, studying, and researching scriptures. She was an excellent teacher of God’s Word the Bible. Sydney used this knowledge to share her strong faith with many others. She was a very hospitable person. Sydney loved opening her home to her spiritual family. She dearly loved doing the same with her natural family members. Sydney passed away on October 21, 2021, surrounded by both of her children. She is survived by her beloved daughters Dola Young and Paulette Nelson (Earl Nelson), three grandchioldren (Ariya McGrew, Yolanda Preston (Kevin Preston) and Orlando Nelson, Jr.), three great grandchildren (Nicholas Preston, Kendall Preston, and Miles Preston) and a host of nephews, nieces, other loving relatives, and friends. Sydney will be dearly missed.
