Georgia Ann Washut Smith

Georgia left this earthly life on Sunday, May 12, 2024. Her loving husband, John Phillip Smith predeceased her in death earlier in the year. Georgia was born in Buffalo, Wyoming on February 16, 1938 to George Walter Washut and Anna Emily Silva Washut. She was the eldest of five children. She is survived by her four sisters: Connie Lee Washut Pabst, Deanna Sue Washut McRae, Joan Elaine Washut Lawrence and Carolyn Jean Washut Campbell. Georgia was raised in Buffalo and graduated from the Johnson County High School with the “Tough as Nails, Hard as Bricks” Class of 1956. She received her nursing degree from St. Mary College, Sisters of Charity Nursing School in Kansas City, Kansas in 1958. She was a Registered Nurse in Kansas, Wyoming and Texas. She met the love of her life, John Phillip Smith at a Halloween party of the young people’s group at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Casper, Wyoming in 1960. They were married on May 26, 1962 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Buffalo, Wyoming. To this marriage were born three children: Kathryn Ann in Casper, Wyoming in 1963, Michael Phillip in Port Arthur, Texas in 1964 and Karla Jane in San Pedro Sula, Honduras in 1967. She has been blessed with an amazing daughter-in-law, Jean Marie Laverty Smith and an amazing son-in-law, David Vance Swann, III plus six beautiful and smart grandchildren: Ian Blaise Smith, Delaney Louise Smith, Brendan George Smith, Alise Kathleen Swann, Camille Jane Swann and Audrey Ann Swann. Georgia and Phil were married for 61 years. Thankfully they are together in Heaven for their 62nd wedding anniversary. Georgia pursued her nursing profession for many years in doctor’s offices and hospitals. She particularly enjoyed pediatrics. She nursed people through the polio epidemic in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Georgia was active in religious education of children at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Houston, Texas for many years. She was a devoted member of the Charity Guild of Catholic Women. She chaired the 1995 fundraising campaign resulting in completion of a major expansion of the Charity Guild building and the development of furniture sales through the Guild store. She was on the Board of Directors of the Samaritans, an organization developed to aid people who have experienced the loss of loved ones. This ministry continues at St. John Vianney Catholic Church. Georgia was also an active member of the parish council for many years. Georgia’s family has lived in the Memorial area for 55 years, and she was a member of the Board of Directors for the Nottingham Civic Association. Georgia maintained many close friendships throughout her life. Many of the friendships trace back to kindergarten in Buffalo, Wyoming as well as friendships she made throughout nursing school and in Houston with parents of her children’s friends.
