Jimmy Lynn Elliott

Jimmy Lynn Elliott was born June 14, 1948, in San Antonio, Texas to parents Jewel Brown Elliott and Ted Austin Elliott. He passed away on June 15, 2026, in Houston, Texas, with family by his side. He was preceded in death by both his parents, his brother John Lampman, and his grandson Aidan Taylor. He is survived by his two brothers, Ted Allen Elliott and Jack Elliott; his ex-wife Mary Jane Elliott; his three children, Shawn, Jena and Eric; and 7 grandchildren, Zach, Erin, Emma, Maddie, Matt, Max and Addie. Jimmy spent most of his childhood in the Rio Grande Valley, growing up in the Sun Oil camp in Starr County, Texas. He graduated as valedictorian from San Isidro High School in 1966 and obtained both a Bachelors degree and a Masters in Education from Pan American University (now the University of Texas – Rio Grande Valley) in Edinburgh. He married Mary Jane Hall in 1969 on his 21st birthday. After college, Jimmy taught English and coached the debate team at McAllen High School. In 1978, the family moved to Baytown where Jimmy served as guidance counselor at various schools in the area, most notably Ross S. Sterling High School for 11 years. In 2004, Jimmy moved to Stafford, VA and worked in administration at North Stafford High School for 9 years. In 2013, he moved to Lake Worth, Florida as a “soft retirement” for several years before returning to Houston, TX in 2016 to be closer to family. Jimmy was a fierce proponent of all the kids and adolescents he worked with in schools, always fighting for the underdog and encouraging his students to rise to their full potential, with both humor and grit. He voraciously consumed information and was often found quoting books, Shakespeare, poems or the Bible, especially if it suited whatever argument he was debating! He laughed easily and often and when he really got going, it was impossible not to join in his hysteria and joy. He enjoyed disarming jokes and verbal wordplay – a sport he has passed on to his children and grandchildren! He loved to garden, to cook, (to attempt) to make wine, to dance, to read, to listen to music (especially Latino music!) and to sit at a beach in the sun, listening to the waves roll in. Jimmy loved his family and friends with a vengeance and had an enormous heart. He requested no funeral or memorial service but that in his memory we … eat tamales, Blue Bell ice cream, fried chicken or catfish and listen to a Mariachi band.
