Simon Jose Antunez

Simon Jose Antunez, 84, of Houston passed away on Sunday, the 21st of January, 2024. Simon was born July 23, 1939, in Maracaibo, Zulia, Venezuela to Ildemaro and Betulia Antunez. He is preceded in death by his parents and 7 siblings. He is survived by his wife Mercedes of 57 years of marriage, and his children and families: Jose Raul Antunez and his wife Paola, and their daughters Sofia and Cristina; his daughter Maria Mercedes Antunez-Fernandez and her husband Americo, and their daughter Veronica. His siblings Luis, Fernando, Flor Maria, Miriam, Milagros, Ildamar and Daniel, also numerous nieces and nephews. Simon grew up in Maracaibo and then San Cristobal, Tachira, Venezuela. He graduated from Liceo Simon Bolivar, and then attended La Universidad del Zulia to get his Petroleum Engineering degree. Later he attended the University of Tulsa for his Master’s degree in Petroleum Engineering. From his childhood memories, he treasured family traditions such as breakfasts with fresh cream and arepas, and searching for the Christmas tree during the holidays. Always ahead of his times, he learned English on his own, and understood the importance of the oil and gas industry in the modern world. Simon enjoyed the symphony, classical music, reading, watching classic movies, and spending time with family and friends, an avid jogger turned walker; a sport he did for forty years and kept him active until recently. Simon was a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and the Sociedad Venezolana de Ingenieros the Petroleo, where he was a member of the Board of Directors. Simon was a great friend, fun loving and always ready with a joke. He was immensely committed to his family, as his father taught him, always loving his country of birth with passion until the end. Mass of Christian Burial will be February 5th at 10:30 AM at St. John Vianney Catholic Church 625 Nottingham Oaks Trail Houston, TX 77079 with reception to follow in St. Jude Hall. Zulia, Venezuela, hijo de Ildemaro y Betulia Antúnez. Le precedieron en la muerte sus padres y 7 hermanos. Le sobreviven su esposa Mercedes unidos en matrimonio por 57 años, y sus hijos y familias: José Raúl Antúnez y su esposa Paola, y sus hijas Sofía y Cristina; su hija María Mercedes Antúnez-Fernández y su esposo Américo, y su hija Verónica. Sus hermanos Luis, Fernando, Flor María, Miriam, Milagros, Ildamar y Daniel, y también numerosos sobrinos. Simón creció en Maracaibo y luego en San Cristóbal, Táchira, Venezuela. Se graduó en el Liceo Simón Bolívar y luego asistió a la Universidad del Zulia donde obtuvo su título de Ingeniería en Petróleo. Posteriormente asistió a la Universidad de Tulsa para realizar su Maestría en Ingeniería de Petróleo. De sus recuerdos de infancia, atesoraba las tradiciones familiares como los desayunos con nata fresca y arepas, y la búsqueda del pino durante las navidades. Siempre adelantado a sus tiempos, aprendió inglés por cuenta propia, y entendió la importancia que tendría la industria petrolera. Simón disfrutaba de la sinfónica, la música clásica, la lectura, ver películas antiguas, y pasar tiempo con su familia y amigos. Fue un ávido corredor y con el paso de los años, caminador; deporte que practicó durante cuarenta años y que lo mantuvo activo hasta hace poco. Simón fue miembro de la Sociedad de Ingenieros de Petróleo y de la Sociedad Venezolana de Ingenieros de Petróleo, donde fue miembro de la Junta Directiva. Simón era un gran amigo, amante de la diversión y siempre dispuesto a jugar bromas. Comprometido inmensamente con su familia, como le enseñó su padre, y hasta el fin de sus días, amó con pasión su país de nacimiento. La misa por sus exequias será el 5 de febrero a las 10:30 a.m., en la Iglesia Católica St. John Vianney 625 Nottingham Oaks Trail Houston, TX 77079 y seguirá una recepción en St. Jude Hall.
